Valheim has reached a major milestone. Version 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026, bringing the long-awaited Deep North biome and a substantial amount of new content. Iron Gate has since released several patches, with version 1.0.16 arriving on September 25.
What’s new in Valheim 1.0?
The Deep North is the centrepiece of the full release, giving Vikings a new region to explore and new challenges to overcome. The update also adds more than 40 weapons, over 80 buildable pieces, more than 20 food items, at least 10 new creatures, four armour sets and achievements. Other improvements include new music, a draw-distance setting and changes to the building menus.
What have the recent patches fixed?
Iron Gate has been addressing issues reported after the 1.0 launch:
- Patch 1.0.14 (September 17): Added more keyboard binding options, an option to skip the opening cinematic and several performance and multiplayer fixes.
- Patch 1.0.15 (September 18): Fixed a terrain duplication issue that could reduce performance and adjusted some Deep North drops and creature spawns.
- Patch 1.0.16 (September 25): Fixed cases where Deep North terrain changes could revert, excessive enemy spawning during raids and several achievements that were not unlocking correctly. It also includes additional crash, graphics and platform-specific fixes.
Patch 1.0.16 may take a few days to reach every platform, but Iron Gate says crossplay remains functional during the rollout.
Returning to an old world?
Existing saves can still be played in Valheim 1.0. However, new biome content generates properly only in areas that have not already been explored. Iron Gate recommends starting a fresh world for the best overall experience. Players using mods should also check compatibility, as Valheim does not officially support them.
Before updating a dedicated server or making changes to an established world, keeping a backup of the world and character saves is a sensible precaution.
